NFL Free Agency: Chicago Bears Trading Justin Fields

After a few days of NFL Free Agency rumors, the Chicago Bears have finally made the big move. Justin Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2025 sixth round pick that can become a forth rounder depending on his playing time.

The move solidifies the Chicago Bears for the number one pick in the NFL draft, presumably drafting USC Quarterback Caleb Williams to be the starter.

Williams will have a powerhouse wide receiver to throw to after the Bears acquired Keenan Allen in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers for a 2024 fourth round pick. He will line up across from DJ Moore, who had over 1,300 receiving yards and eight touchdowns with Fields in 2023. The receiving room was also bolstered with the additional signing of wide receiver Dante Pettis to a one year deal, and tight end Gerald Everett to a two-year deal.

The Chicago Bears also made a move at running back. They signed D’Andre Swift to a three-year, $24 million deal on Monday. He will play alongside Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson, who split time in the backfield last season.

Chicago Bears are looking to the future

The Bears planned to significantly upgrade the offense after the 2023 season and are in a prime place to do so. They have two picks in the first round, first and ninth overall. After using a pick to trade for Allen, they have two more picks, one in the third and one in the fourth.

While I’m excited about the Keenan Allen trade, I am a bit disappointed the Bears could only get a sixth round pick for Fields. With so many quarterback needy teams out there, I’m surprised they couldn’t trade for something a bit better. If Caleb Williams doesn’t work out for the Chicago Bears, it will be the third first round pick the team has used on a quarterback since 2017. And as we all know, that didn’t turn out great either.

What do you think of the moves so far? Will Williams be the true franchise quarterback the Chicago Bears have so desperately needed? Or another mediocre pick like the last two? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! You can also find me over on X @amerika108.
