With the 28th pick of the 2024 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs take the combine speedster Xavier Worthy. Brett Veach (KC GM) and head coach Andy Reid traded with the Buffalo Bills and moved up four sports from 32 to 28. Xavier Worthy at pick 28 – could be a steal of round 1 as several mock drafts had him going in the top 15 to 20 slots. However, because of several surprise early QBs picked – Worthy slipped and KC made their move.
Wide Receiver Situation
The Chiefs desperately need wide receiver help for future Hall of Fame Quarterback – Patrick Mahomes. During the 2023 season, the Chiefs had a league high drop rate with pass-catchers dropping 44 of the 597 passes that Mahomes threw. Rookie Rashee Rice was the lone bright spot for the Wide Receivers along with TE Travis Kelce. Despite the shortcomings, the Chiefs got the job done – winning back to back super bowls. The Chiefs picked up Marquise «Hollywood» Brown (26 Years old) as a free agent who adds proven capabilities and speed, but with Rice’s likely suspension of 2 to 4 (or more) games and any other potential legal concerns – wide receiver flew to the to the top of the Chiefs needs list.
What the Chiefs are getting
This year Xavier Worthy famously broke the NFL combine record with a 4.21-second 40-yard dash and Kansas City has another speedy receiver to partner with Brown. The Chiefs haven’t had this kind of wide receiver speed since Tyreek Hill. Experts qualify Worthy as a pure speed receiver that can create yards after the catch. He could also be used in the return game with his speed. However, there are concerns whether the Texas grad’s build at 5’11” and 172 pounds can hold up at the next level, but at only 20 years old, he could bulk up some in the coming years. Furthermore, several experts have noted concern over his drops in college. It is likely Worthy will be a called into action quickly given Rice’s situation. Knowing Andy Reid’s creativity, there should be plenty of ways to get the ball into this guy’s hands and turn him loose.
Can anyone stop the Kansas City Chiefs?
AFC rival, the Buffalo Bills traded away Stefon Diggs and then gave up their 28th spot to Kansas City who now has the fastest receiver at the combine. Which GMs throughout the NFL signed up to give Patrick Mahomes more weapons? Obviously, we will have to see how the season plays out – but the consequence for winning the Super Bowl is the last pick of the draft. Kansas City certainly made the most of their pick in the back end of round 1.
What is next for the Chiefs in the draft
Kansas City has 6 draft picks left in Rd 2 (64), Rd 4(131,133), Rd 5(159,173), & Rd 7(248). Other needs to consider – left tackle, corner back replacement for L’Jarius Sneed (traded to the Titans), defensive lineman to support Chris Jones, and depth at running back to support Isiah Pacheco. There should be plenty of players on the back end of the draft for KC to add depth to their roster.
