Have the Cowboys seen enough to sign Dak?

Another quarterback signs a big extention, so what’s the holdup with Dak Prescott?

So that other team in blue and silver has been paying the heck out of their players, something the Cowboys have been, well, less than willing to do so far. Jared Goff became the highest paid player in Detroit Lions history with a 4-year, $212 million dollar contract extention. The Lions already paid Amon-Ra St Brown and Penei Sewell because they know a good thing when they see it. So why does this matter to the Cowbkys? Dak Prescott is why.

If not now, when?

Dak Prescott is on the last year of his contract and will not be out of a job long if the Cowboys decide to let him walk. Prescott is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025 without an extention. I love Dak Prescott, I want him to succeed and I want that success to be in a Cowboys uniform. The Cowboys haven’t made it to the conference championship since I was in junior high, and the lack of playoff success might have the front office willing to gamble. But every player that’s signed before Dak makes that price tag go up.

The Lions not only managed to pay their quarterback but also their star receiver and tackle this off-season. Dak isn’t the only Cowboy in line for a big pay day-their own star receiver and big defensive playmaker also have a contract coming. CeeDee Lamb is the focal point of the Cowboys offense, and Michah Parsons continues to prove he was the best pick for the Cowboys in 2021.

The Cowboys didn’t do much in free agency in terms of giving Dak Prescott more weapons. Are the Cowboys sabotaging their own team to avoid a big contract for the quarterback? As frustrating as the team and front office can be that doesn’t seem likely, but the inaction in free agency coupled with the «wait and wait and wait and see» attitude from Jerry and Stephen Jones, the patience of Cowboys Nation may finally be being put to the test.

What does the future hold?

The big question is if the Cowboys move on from Dak, what’s the game plan for the future? The Cowboys traded this years fourth round pick to San Francisco in exchange for Trey Lance. Drafting a quarterback is an option, but if the Cowboys are successful this year they’ll likely have to trade up to secure someone worth the investment. The Cowboys could look for a bridge quarterback in free agency, but any quarterback that’s likely to give them success will probably have already been paid.

The Cowboys open the season against the Cleveland Browns on September 8th.
